Vestiges

Along the path, another view of the ruins.

I'm trying to make this a more or less daily activity, walking through the woods to the Gardon River. You start out from the pétanque court in the center of Vers and walk up past the pharmacie. A few hundred feet later you enter a foot path that takes you through the woods, sometimes next to the aqueduct ruins, sometimes directly on top of them. Finally you cross a modestly trafficked road by a rond-point to enter the parking lot of the official Pont du Gard visitor's center, where you rejoin civilization, which is to say, tour buses and assorted tourists. A few hundred feet more and the spectacular bridge  itself appears, without warning, which seems a silly thing to say given the multiplicity of signs, maps, placards, and paths that announce its presence. But, there it is.
